Auckland Champs

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th March

Trent Duggan’s Saturday was one of those perfect days when it all came together.  He cleaned up every race in his 50cc MX 6-8 Years class, his awesome riding beating all those he’d been battling against throughout the summer. Congratulations Trent (pictured on left) for the top podium spot.

The McClymont brothers raced in different age groups in the 65cc class. It was only Josh’s 4th time on a 65 but some great riding with the 7-8 year olds gave him 4th place overall for the day. Jack had  one good race with a 3rd in the 9-11 years category but a couple of crashes in the other two – eg. a big endo in race 3 when he was running 3rd - lost him placings and he finished 6th overall.

The Australian riders who competed in the event were particularly fast. Word has it that over in Oz, they always ride on the big tracks and they’re allowed all the after market tricks on their bikes whereas here, riders have to leave their machines stock standard.  Apparently the track was hot and dusty but wet and muddy at the same time.  A contradiction in terms? No, just a water main that sprung a leak.

Cameron Forlong collected another title with a top of the podium win in the 85cc 11-12 year class. Not quite a clean sweep due to a crash in race 3 because “Dad changed his tyres”. The lesson learnt - “Never race what you haven’t trained”. Details of his races at the Auckland Champs and at the Sunday Oceanias are on Cameron's profile page. In the same class, Jovhann Phillips had a massive off in his second race which took him out of contention for the rest of the day. Cam McCaskie was hoping for better things in the 13-16 years 85cc class but an off in every race limited his chances.

Several of Tauranga’s younger senior riders competed in the Sunday races. In the National 125 class, Roydon White just missed the podium with a 4th place whilst Danny Merriman came in 9th and Ryan Metz 12th overall.  Tauranga was represented in the Women’s race by Jessie and Casey Waterhouse who came in 5th and 7th behind the unbeatable Courtney Duncan.

All these riders will no doubt be competing in the first round of the Tauranga Motorcycle Club’s 2010 Series which is on at Maddix Park this Sunday March 14th.

Unfortunately Australia won this year’s Oceania competition that was held on the Sunday at the same time as the Auckland Champs. Check out Andy McGechan’s viewpoint on www.mnz.co.nz
