The mini track at Awakaponga was fair buzzing as the future champions of NZ motocross from all parts of the country gathered in a holiday atmosphere for Summercross 2015.

For many, it was their first big event; for all, it was the occasion to have some fun but also to rise to the challenge of some very competitive racing.

It was Mount Maunganui’s Sonny Te Whetu’s first big race day on his PW50 and he had a great time and was well pleased with his 3/4/4 results and 4th place overall in the Trail 50cc 4-5 Years class. Travis Crane (#52 left) fromTauranga on his TTR50 had a fantastic day too with 3 second places to finish 2nd overall behind Seadon White from Taupo who had 3 wins out of 3 in the class.

The 6-8 Years Trail raced with the younger age group.  Cooper Purdie (Papamoa) on a PW50 came 5th. He had only been 6 years old for a week and race 1 was his first ever race. He was very pleased with his lap times and really happy and proud of his results.

Connor Smyth (#51 pictured left) made a clean sweep of the Trail 7-11 Years well ahead of Liam White from Whakatane (2nd) and Ryan White from Te Awamutu (3rd). Caleb Evans finished further back with consistent riding & in 9th place.

MX 50cc 6-8 Yearsclass winner Cole Davies from Auckland achieved top bragging rights for the day, all classes included, on his KTM50SX. Tied for 1st with Gisborne rider TK Wirepa-Hei  at the end of race 2, his race 3 win gave him the overall with TK second and Kobe Thoms from Christchurch 3rd.  Zane Beattie from Te Puke had a gnarly crash in race 1 when he came round a flagless corner and straight into another rider.  This put him out of contention for the podium but he came back with a vengeance in races 2 and 3 gaining a 6th and then a 4th place for a pleasing 5th overall.  Charlie Williams from Pyes Pa (pictured above #777) was 14th and Cody Olds from Te Puke 15th.

In the MX 65cc 7-8 Years, Alex Garland from Napier took 1st place with 1/2/1 results followed by Lachie Ross  (4/1/2) from Upper Hutt and Mitch Kiernan (2/3/3) from Rotorua.  Mitch was 5th in NZ at the nationals this year so he did better than expected in this particularly hard group.

For Aidan Roberts (# 111 left) from Tauranga who finished  5th, it was like Christmas all over again. It was his first Summercross and he absolutely loved it. The camaraderie was awesome and fellow competitors were really friendly – especially when Dad wasn’t exactly sure what to do with the transponder. Aidan felt like a little fish in a big pond when he saw the speed of some of the others zipping round but he likes going fast so was rapt with his 7th, 4th  and 6th placings. Seton Davis, also from Tauranga, rode really well and moved up 5 placings throughout the day.

In the MX65cc 9-11 Years class, Jakob Bourne (# 51 left) usually prefers a wet day to highlight his skills but on Saturday he had a thoroughly enjoyable day winning two of his 3 races He had the second fastest time in practice but changed his gearing slightly and amped up the ante. Race two was his worst result but his best race.  He missed a gear at the start so had to really ride to catch up. A rider in front of him stalled at one point so Jakob ended up 2nd which gave him the overall for the class. Second was Zac Scott from Hastings and 3rd Jackson Josephs from Rotorua.  Dominic Williams (Pyes Pa) finished 8th and was well pleased with this top 10 result.  Each race, he moved up the result table and in the final race 3 he rode brilliantly to 7th place.

Congratulations to all the riders and their parents for their sportsmanship at a very well run event.
