Tauranga Round 1

Tauranga held the first round of the club’s Spring Series on Sunday.  Numbers were low partially because of a dates’ clash with the Rotorua Club. However, the out-of-towners who came enjoyed the track and there was a heap of good racing. There was a mix of riders. There were the experienced racers who fairly blitzed around the tracks and made winning look easy despite the strong competition keeping them honest - Logan Blackburn (Senior A  & the 15-16 Years 125cc), Jessie Waterhouse (Senior B 125cc & Senior Women), Danny Merriman (17-20 Years & Senior A 250cc), Christina Cameron (Junior Women), Tyler Steiner (11-12 Years 85cc), Brian Breingan (40+ Vets), Taylor Kennedy (65cc B Grade) Jontae Carroll (50cc Division 1) and Trent Duggan (50cc Division 2) all made clean sweeps in their respective classes. At the other extreme, there were the novice riders, getting into the racing side of MX for the first time – Tamzin Fuller, Callum Ranger and Max Kleiss for example, thoroughly enjoyed their day and can’t wait for the next round.  And in between were all the other riders who won some, lost some, had varying degrees of success but who have the challenge and keen desire to do even better next time.

The next round in the Tauranga Series is scheduled for 14th November at Maddix Park.

Rotorua Final Round

It was freezing in the morning but good and hot in the afternoon. The tracks were good but unfortunately, rider numbers were also low- the same problem of clashing dates.

The minis had 2 races, the seniors three, as this was the final round and points needed to be sorted for the prize-giving. Reports have come in mentioning several local riders. Cam McCaskie  as been consistent in his results and won the Junior 125cc series. Chris Merriman was absolutely hooning in both his 65cc class and his “extra practice” 85cc class and he came 1st in the 7-11 65cc series. Jovhann Phillips was riding the bike that was there for  use as spares. His normal bike had no power in the 1st race – pressure in the crankcase was upsetting the reed valves - so everything was swapped to the old bike just to get Jovhann round the track.  It kept him in the points in the 8-12 years 85cc class and secured him 2nd place for the series. Jordan Milsom came 3rd in the series but was absent because of a clash with his school’s fund-raising trail ride event. Hayden Rumble was rapt to get 2 hole-shots on the day and gain 4th place for the series in the 13-16 years 85cc class ahead of his mate Evan Hawkless (6th). Connor Hawkless (pictured above) is very proud to have won his B grade 65cc class with his brother Regan 2nd in the Trail class. The McClymonts were there.  Jack likes the big track and the jumps. There was some disappointment regarding the number of trophies awarded, however, despite the low attendance, a good day was had by all.

Whakatane Round 4

Whakatane hadn’t had much luck with events throughout the winter but Round 4 had great weather and a track with a few soft bits forming ruts that were good for practice until the last round. Then the rain came so the last laps were in the “mud and goo”.

In the senior races, Danny Merriman found himself behind the likes of Hamish Dobbyn, Kayne Lamont and Brad Groombridge, all getting in some extra practice before the Taupo Extravaganza but not being pointed which allowed Danny to “win” all his races. Having missed 2 rounds, he is in 9th place for the Senior A Lites series. Keith Paterson and Scott Atchison have both missed a round but are in 9th and 10th place respectively in the series for 35+ Vets. Ian Conway raced the Vets 45+ class and is lying 3rs but he also had a successful day and maintained his 1st position with 2 wins in the Senior B Open class. Brian Breingan is running 4th and Scott Atchison 9th in the same class. Robby Stewart had 4-3-2 finishes in the Senior A Open class and is in 3rd place for this class and the Senior Open for the series.

In the Junior Open races Cam McCaskie’s 5th and 6th placings were enough for him to now lead the series.  Max Emett is in 5th but nibbling at Kurt Langford’s 4th position – Kurt is out of action with an injury.  Stan Oliff won all his races in the Junior B 125cc class and is now in 4th position overall.  James Ramsden is second and Jake Whyte is 5th. In the Junior B 85cc, Tyler Steiner is 3rd, Hayden Rumble is 4th and Jordan Milsom who was not pointed for 2 of the rounds is 12th. In the junior Novice 125cc category, Ethan Harihari had 2 wins and a 3rd and is running second in the series.

As for the minis, Chris Merriman with his 1-3-2 results has a 2 point lead over Matt Atkins in the 65cc Expert class with Trent Duggan and Connor Lucas further back in 5th and 6th. Harrison Forrester-Moore won all 5 races on the day and has moved to 2nd place in the series.
