Awesome ! Awesome ! Awesome !

Beaming smiles were on the faces and "awesome" was the word on the lips of the mini and junior MX riders as they collected their signed Ben Townley trophies and certificates at the end of the Motocross Giant.com sponsored Maddix Park “Once in a Blue Moon” BT Trophy MX Day on September 23rd.

Parents reported that, in an unusual reversal of roles, it was the kids who dragged them out of bed on the Sunday morning, they were so excited. Former MX world champion Ben Townley is an idol to most aspiring NZ riders and the desire to win one of the trophies Ben won when he was young like them was a strong motivation.

The majority of the riders were Bay of Plenty locals but riders from over the hill in the Waikato and as far south as Napier came to compete for the highly prized trophies as well.

The tracks were perfectly groomed and held up well, the weather was kind and the atmosphere of the day was fun, relaxed and enjoyable. “wicked”, “a blast”, “cool”, “awesome”, “loved it”,  “great fun”, “a real buzz”  and  “refreshing to be racing again at Maddix” were among the comments.

There were some happy coincidences. Jovhann Phillips (pictured left) was near somersaulting over the moon to win first place in the 12-14 Years 125cc class and collect a trophy Ben had won in the exact same class in 1999, the year Jovhann was born and the reason his bike is number 999 !

Huntly Motorcycle Club member Cole Dalley was stoked to return home with a trophy Ben had won at a Huntly Club event in 1994 !

And 6 year old Emma McClymont was rapt to find her 3rd place trophy was pink – her favourite colour !

One lucky rider may not realize he/she has an added bonus. One trophy has a signature from Darryll King to the young Ben.  Just look under the base.

Not everyone could win a trophy unfortunately but the BT signed certificates were much appreciated and laminators have since been in overdrive.

For several children it was their first trophy or certificate or their first time on a podium and as such, a great boost to their confidence. Even those who didn’t have their best results ever enjoyed the competition, the who-got-the-hole-shot/ home track advantage talk and the friendly social interaction. Seeing that Ben’s trophies were for 10th, 7th and 6th as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd places  and linking this to Ben’s message “Keep racing, this is where I started too” certainly provided encouragement and motivation and emphasized the  importance of grass roots motocross.

Reliable sources state that every mini’s trophy/ certificate went to school on the Monday for a morning talk about Ben Townley.

Although the focus of the BT Trophy day was on the minis and juniors, the equally competitive seniors were not forgotten and medals were presented to the first 3 place getters in each class.

No-one went home empty handed thanks to much appreciated spot prizes of body armour, gloves, neck braces, socks, kidney belts and Nitro Circus DVDs offered by www.MotocrossGiant.com .

Special thanks to them and to Mike Sheely and Paul Callinan for the track grooming, to Greg Langford and Kurt for starting/ track sweeping duties, to Kelvin Meredith for the mini track organization plus help with prize-giving and also to all the lap-scorers and marshalls and everyone else who helped make the day so successful.

Lastly, an injury update: Callum Ranger had a plate put in his broken collar bone. Ben Hegarty suffered bad bruising but no broken bones. Cameron Forlong will be in hospital for a while with multiple fractures. The positives are he is young and fit and his arms, his legs and his brain are all working. It is just going to take time.

Best wishes Cameron.
