King of the North 2012

Several local riders went up to Waimauku on March 25th  for the annual King of the North MX event. The first 5 place-getters in each class received trophies but there was an abundance of give-aways for all the riders. The track is a grass one and the wet weather caused a few issues. There was the normal embarrassment of being towed out but some vehicles even got stuck getting in!

Madoc Dixon had the most successful day, finishing 2nd in the Intro MX 50cc 4-7 Yrs class.  He won 2 of the 3 races but a disastrous race 2 saw him miss the top of the podium by 1 point.

In the Intro 50cc 6-8 Yrs trail class, Kristian Crane (pictured above) was racing against the same elite group he is up against at Pukekohe. He rode consistently for 4th place and is rapt with his trophy.

Sean Callinan (pictured  on left wearing his King of the North tee-shirt) came home 8th in the 7-8 Yrs 65cc class and absolutely loves the KTM cap and the stickers he received.

Luke Fraser-Brown and Sam Meredith competed in the MX 50cc 6-8 Years.  Luke finished 10th overall but Sam fell off while running 6th fastest in the lap times in the first race. He DNFed with a sprained wrist but this wasn’t the only problem for the Meredith family. Wade Meredith’s bike blew up and then their vehicle was one of those that got stuck in the mud and needed towing out by the farm tractor.

Primary & Intermediate MX

Saturday 31st March saw the Rotorua Club hosting heaps of action when the main track was used for the Primary & Intermediate School MX Event. It was essentially the same track as that used by the secondary students the day before but with parts of the back section and jumps cut out. There had been  rain overnight that had soaked in well and the start gates were fielding up to 35 riders. It was an awesome day with loads of happy kids.

Some comments from people we’ve caught up with:

Tyler Wiremu (pictured on left) got his first trophy for 5th overall in the 50mx class. He missed out on 3rd overall after crashing in his last race and going from 2nd place to second-to-last. He was the only kid on a mini as well; all the other kids were on SX models!

Chris Merriman got good starts – 2 good and one really good in front of Maximus Purvis - and came 3rd in the 11-12 85cc class.

Jack McClymont (bike #535 below) came 6th in the same class. “I’d have got higher up if I hadn’t hit a big hole and crashed in one race”, he says. “I fell off at the first corner in race 2 as well”, he adds, “but heaps of others did too. They put out yellow flags but lots of kids kept passing on the yellow flag”. Trent Haywood gained a 5th place.

Trent Cameron (bike #72 on left) describes the Rotorua track as “totally mean”. He was there riding for his school, Otumoetai Intermediate, along with Kane Harland and all the team were happy to finish in the top 20. Josh McClymont rode well with 10/9/8 finishes in the 7-11 65cc class.
