7.30pm Friday: Latest Report in from the Te Puke A & P Show site.

“We’ve just finished”, says Te Puke Motorcycle Club President, Murray Jensen, “and it’s going to be real good.  The “it” in question is the endurocross circuit that he and members of the club have been setting up over the past week in readiness for the club’s 2nd Annual Endurocross event which is taking place tomorrow, Saturday 12th February at the A&P Showgrounds site just south of Te Puke.

Endurocross is a kind of tight MX race over obstacles and the obstacles lined up for Saturday include rocks, tyres, logs, cars, firewood and culvert pipes.  There’s even a hole in the ground.

“There was a straight that we thought was a bit too fast”, laughs Murray. “We could have added something else but it was easier to get the bobcat and make a hole”. And, he adds gleefully, “With a bit of rain tonight, it could be full of water in the morning!”

The circuit itself is challenging but fine. The track was tested this afternoon by a 14 year old on a CRF150, who managed most of it without a problem, his only slight sticking point being the culvert section. The trick, of course, for the riders, is to do it at speed and to do it faster than the others.  There is over $1000 up for grabs in prize money and spot prizes. Last year’s event was spectacular (see photo above) and this year promises even more for spectators and riders alike. The club is expecting 40 odd riders to compete.

Practice starts at 9am, the heats at about 11am and then the finals after that. The show will be finished by 3pm. It was important to allow time for people to make the Nitro Circus event in Hamilton – and, for one  best man, a 5pm wedding – according to Murray.

Go and check it out.
