Extreme Conditions but Great Racing

Woodville 2015 Day 2

Over 500 riders gathered for the 54th Woodville Grand Prix.

It was hot hot hot - both the day and the racing !

The conditions on Sunday were extreme with lots of dust and temperatures reaching 31 degrees but the racing was close and full on.  Bike set up was ultra important, as was keeping cool and keeping up the fluid intake for the riders.

MX1 GP & Invitation Feature Race

Cody Cooper’s smooth, clean, decisive riding convincingly won all three MX1 GP motos but in the  Invitation Feature Race, he was pipped by Australian rider Kirk Gibbs. Scott Columb took 3rd place on the podium in each case.

Rhys Carter was moving fast but so were some others and he seemed to have a day struggling with starts.

Roydon White was one of the “first race, worst race” riders. His back brakes went - something snapped - and so he ended up with a DNF. The following races were a different story. In race 2, he finished 12th, a great result considering there were 7 internationals in the race. 19th in race 3 was a more average result on the dry and increasingly rough track, but, Roydon was generally pleased with his overall achievement, race 1 excluded.

MX2 GP

In the MX2 races, Josiah Natzke was at the top of the board with 2/1 results heading into the race 3.  However, a lowly 14th gave the overall to consistently charging Michael Phillips (3/2/1), followed by Caleb Ward (1/12/2).

Campbell King started out well, qualifying 6th out of 60 or so riders in the MX2. He continued with a 4th and a 5th in the first two races but the third was a ”bummer” to put it mildly. He got a good start but then was pushed out, someone went down, he got clipped and had to dodge off the track. He had worked back to about 7th and had just passed Logan Blackburn when Campbell landed in a hole and both he and Logan got their bikes all tangled. Sorting that took precious time and  his 13th place in the race took Campbell down to 7th overall.

Logan Blackburn’s day did have a slight tendancy towards bad starts and crashes which left him with two 14th places heading into race 3. The second race was the sprint race so impossible to make up the time lost in two crashes. “In the last race”, says Logan, “ I got a good start, faded a bit but then got entangled with Campbell. It was my best race, I finished 11th but ended up 14th overall. It just wasn’t my day.”

Scotty Canham would have been higher up the top 10 list if he hadn’t had a “bit of a tumble” at the start of the last race, cut off  y a rider going round the first corner into the straight. “I was almost a lap down, I could see the lead rider,” says Scotty, “but I pulled out all the stops, did the 3rd fastest lap time of the race and went from last to 17th.”  His 5/7/17 results gave him a 9th place overall.

125 Grand Prix

Josiah totally dominated the 125cc Grand Prix class with Wyatt Chase (3/2/3) in second and Ben Broad (2/13/2) in third.

As for our locals, Tyler Steiner didn’t gel too well with his 125 on Sunday. He only got in one race after he came up short on the super jump and hurt his wrist.  He clicked with his 250, got the holeshot money and the third podium place in the Junior Champion 250cc Race.

Dan Bell had a couple of big crashes and withdrew from race1 with a sprained thumb.

River Races

The two River Races belonged to Paul Whibley, noblesse oblige, but, with a third and a second, Ben Townley was runner-up with a strong showing of his multi skills. In 3rd place was Josh Hunger.

Vets GP

1st Martin Axtens, 2nd Brent Scammell, 3rd Moston Wadsworth

Women’s GP

Taylar Rampton clean swept the opposition and the topped the podium with Tyla Cushion (2/3/2) and Sarah Elwin (4/2/5) second and third.  Jessie Waterhouse (3/6/4) was just off the podium in 4th.
