Spring Series Final Round

Sunday’s final round of the Tauranga Motorcycle Club’s Spring Series at Maddix Park will be action packed. Because the series takes the best 3 results from the 4 rounds, almost all of the  class winners will be not be known until the end of the day’s racing.

On the mini track, Jordan Lewis has a good lead in the Division 1 50cc class but with Jontae Carroll and Jacob Hunt back, he is going to have his work cut out if he wants to stay in front.  In the Division 2 class, it could be anyone’s name on the trophy.  Sean Callinan and Sam Meredith could drop their disastrous round 3s and be successful.  Kane Grimmett is right up there too.  However if Trent Duggan wins on the day, he’ll sweep the board. Taylor Kennedy has the 65 cc B grade well under control with Logan Symes a consistent second but Harrison Forrest-Moore will need to pull out all the stops if he wants to rein in Bradley Jeffrey in the Trail class. The A grade 65 class has Brad Cameron in the lead however Wesley Fuller, Connor Lucas and Trent Cameron have been at every round and this last one will be the decider.  Chris Merriman won round 3 so could play a determining role in who takes the crown.

In the Junior 11-12 years 85cc class, Simon Atkinson and Cameron Farley both have 3 rounds up their sleeve so have allowed themselves some leeway.  In the next age group up (13-16 years), Matt Kenyon has the lead.  Haydn Rumble will be back after his big off in round 3 and out to get the chequered flag even though he knows he won’t make the podium.  Lee Ormsby is one to watch out for.  He only needs a good event to seriously challenge Evan Hawkless and Cole Atkinson for a podium place.  Matt Kenyon also has a small lead over Ash Garrett in the 12-14 years 125 cc class and if Max Emett can make the final round count, he’ll join them on the podium.  However, Kurt Langford is planning to be there.  With only one round under his belt, he’s out of the race for the trophy but he will do what he does do well – add lots of cranked up action to the race for the top.

In the 15-16 years 125cc races, Marco White will be doing everything in his power to retain his lead over Denzil Grimmett with Taylor Trott also in with a chance. But Logan Blackburn plans to be present and could take out the title. “I’m riding the Supercross at Tokoroa on Saturday night,” he tells us, “ but I still hope to ride Maddix on the Sunday.  Mum might have to sign me on so I can get a bit more sleep. Tokoroa doesn’t finish until 10pm!”

Chris Foster had looked promising in this class also but unfortunatelyhis shoulder reconstruction op will keep him off both the MX and the trail/crosscountry tracks for some time. Al the best for a good recovery, Chris.

In the Junior Girls group, Christina Cameron has the lead but is being heavily pushed by Ashley Bond who has had the edge over Christina in the last 2 rounds.  The Senior Women ‘s class is the domain of the Waterhouse sisters. Jessie has first place all sewn up but there is plenty of room for Casey Waterhouse, Nicole Jeffrey and Heather Campbell to press their case.

The Senior B 125 class also has the Waterhouses in front. In the Senior 125s, with Chris Foster out, Sheldon Garrett is in with a chance but Logan Blackburn up against Ryan Metz (not racing for points) promises some exciting racing.  The Senior B grade 250cc will be between Leddy Middleton and Matthew Atchison but the big question in the A grade 250 cc is who will show up? Scott Barr-Smith and Danny Merriman could be in for a showdown.  The Senior 17-20 years class start line is another guessing game. Luke Henry is out with injury while Dion Sheely and Rhys Henry are away pursuing their cross country interests this Sunday. Vet Brian Breingan is unlikely to be dethroned but the riders following behind, Bruce Cameron (pictured), Leddy Middleton, Kelvin Meredith and Bruce Pullyn, are in close contention and who knows what Keith Paterson will pull out of his favourite bike of the moment, the  one he rides in the vintage motocross ?

Sign on is from 7.30am, riders’ briefing at 8.45 am and practice starts at 9am. Spectators are most welcome.  It will be a great days racing and the prize-giving for the series will follow.
