Taupo MX Round 3

Taupo turned on the sun for round 3 of the club MX series on Sunday. The track started off mint but hardened up and became a little rougher as the day progressed.  It is said that Taupo is the track where you go to do your time, almost your apprenticeship.  It is usually a tough day, it’s always hard work, but each time you come away a better rider.

Jovhann Phillips (pictured left) had a very successful day. Jovhann has been a regular top ten finisher in the 11-12 85cc class but this time, he was “really on the gas” and made it to the podium. A huge improvement on the start line – second out of the first corner in 2 of the 3 races – gave him three 3rd places, 3rd overall for the day and even more determination. He fell off in the sawdust pit in the last race but got up and pushed himself back to 3rd. Brad Cameron finished just outside the top 10 with an 11th place overall.

In the 8-10 year 85cc class, Jordan Milsom fell off in a couple of races but, with three second placings, still came 2nd in the points.  In the same class, carburettor problems plagued Jack McClymont in race1, leaving him trailing in 12th position but a strong showing in races 2 and 3 (two third places) meant he finished the day 4th overall.  Josh McClymont rode his 65cc in the same class with much more excitement and confidence for an 11th place overall.  Brad Haywood was “riding” rather racing this week as he eases himself back into the racing scene.

In the Junior 125 races, there were the usual highs and lows.  In the 12-14 years,  Aaron Wiltshier finished 2-2-3 for 2nd overall and Matt Kenyon 4-5-5 for 5th.  “I was on a borrowed bike”, Aaron tells us. “In the 3rd race I dumped it and went over the handlebars so I’ve got a few bruises.”  Evan Hawkless, in the same class, is even more battered and bruised.  He started the day well and was loving it until getting caught up in a rut and crashing in the last lap of the last race. He ended up 11th  ( 5-7-DNF) and a little concussed.

Garth Amrein won the 15-16 years overall (1-2-2) with Cam McCaskie  in 4th place (5-4-4).  Cam was pleased with one particular achievement. “I stayed on my bike today”, he says.

On the mini track, Sean Callinan and Jontae Carroll, in their first season in the 7-8 years  65cc class, were having their own race within a race with Sean just pipping Jontae for 12th place overall.  Jacob Hunt’s day was not as successful as hoped and expected in the 6-8 years MX 50cc Division 2.  He won the first race but finished 9th overall a blown clutch ivirtually ended his day.

Starts were a problem for local riders in the 9-11 year class.  Chris Merriman was half to three quarters way back at the start but worked his way up to 4-4-5 finishes and 4th overall.  Trent Duggan had some bad starts too. He and Harrison Moore battled for 9th and 8th respectively while Xavier Anderson, with only 2 races on the board, was 14th.

The senior results show Scott Canham winning  the MX2 and coming 5th in the Seniors All In plus Scott Atchison coming 12th overall in the Vets 35-44 class after competing in only 1 of the two races.  However as usual, there were many riders without transponders.
