3 Day Enduro - Naki Champs

The only NZ 3 day Enduro was held in Maramarua over the weekend of 2nd to 5th December.  The event, organized by Greg Power of power Adventures, is the only true Multi Day Enduro in NZ and was held under International rules with work periods, special tests, etc. There were entries from Southland to Australia including several riders from the Bay of Plenty.

Dion Sheely put in a sterling performance and won the Youth Category and came home 14th overall, a great effort when you consider the calibre and experience of many of the other riders.  According to his dad, Mike, Dion paced himself well.  He and his mate, Jonathon Hill (pictured), had a good battle and were pretty level pegging with Dion sitting about 30 seconds behind. This continued until the last section when Jonathan made a mistake, Dion went past and won by 21 seconds.  Not bad after spending approximately 18 hours on the bike over the 3 day event. The 3rd place getter in the Youth category, an Australian competitor,   was a further 8 minutes back.

The Maramarua track was pretty hard and dry, there’d been no rain and most thought the conditions would suit the Australians.  However, the “Ozzie” had trouble handling the local tree roots. “We’ve got tree roots in Australia,” he said, “but they go straight down, not across like the ones here”.

Of the nearly 60 riders who took part, there were only a few DNFs. Most riders were pretty satisfied with the course.  On piece went over the road and way outback for 2 ½ hours with a fuel dump on the other side.

Tauranga rider Reece Burgess was 8th overall and 3rd in the E4 class, Phil Singleton from Te Puke was 13th overall and 5th in the E2 class, Murray Jensen (Te Puke) was 4th in the Vets and 31st overall and Morgan Edwards was 3rd in the ladies and 40th overall.

The overall winner, Karl power, was “on fire” for the 3 days. He won 20 of the 24 terrain tests and the whole event by more than 2 minutes. Second was his cousin Chris. They were no doubt helped by their recent   participation in the International 6 Day in Mexico. Sam Greenslade, Rory Meads and Jason Davis were all right up there but a few seconds off the pace all the way through. Sean Clarke won the Vet section.

There was a dash for cash at the end that was won by Karl Power with Jason Davis second.

Most of the same riders will be heading to Waimiha this weekend for the ist round of the Nationall Enduru Champs on the Saturday and a round of the GNCC on the Sunday. Another busy weekend coming up.

Taranaki Motocross: Jovhann Phillips is really pleased with his 3rd place in his 85cc class at the Taranaki Champs.  Congratulations Jovhann.
