Sun to rain to a track littered with bikes

Raglan Rox  22nd Jan  2011

“The track was now littered with bikes especially on several of the slick hills that climbed up through the bush section. I managed to weave my way up the toughest hill safely, threading my way through the cooked and stuck bikes, arriving at the finish in first and sharing the win with my team mate Rory”.

That is how Paul Whibley, (pictured above) described the last lap at last weekend’s Raglan Rox event held at a new venue near Oparau.  Whibley formed a formidable duo with fellow Yamaha rider Rory Meads.  However the rival team of Jayden Grey and Ben Townley was no pushover. Capitalizing on a crash by Rory Mead when the track got slippery, the Kawasaki pairing took the lead and held it until the last lap when the determined assault by Paul Whibley bore fruit and he was first across the winning line. In third place in the 4 stroke overs was the Jesse Wiki/David Till team.

MX/supercross riders are becoming more frequently seen, testing their skills and fitness at enduro events. Tauranga rider Rhys Henry had fellow local Davi Fisher as a team mate in the 4 stroke unders category. They redeemed themselves well with a 5th place in a class that was won by Scott & Callum Birch and that had the likes of Sean Clarke and Mark Penny in the group as well. “It was great at the beginning,” says Rhys, but once the rain started, you just had to try and find new lines”. The track had been good and fast initially. However, 3 laps in, the weather changed and so did the track. The persistent drizzle made the hard surface clay extremely slippery and greasy. It was Davi’s first cross country and he enjoyed it until the rain came. According to Rhys, Davi wants to do more cross country races – but only on the fine days.

Final Round of the Bel Ray 15th Jan 2011

Rhy Henry was also at the final round of the Bel Ray series held in the Huntly area the week before. But the luck wasn’t with him. Two flat tyres make a day you would rather forget.

Gavin Weston, on the other hand, had a very successful day.  He won his Super Vets 50+ class which gave him one second and two firsts for the series and first place in his class overall. “This round was very demanding, very dusty and very strenuous,” he says.”It was all up and down on famland with some river sections. Gavin is looking forward to competing in the Masters Games in Wanganui.

Other local riders included: Drisana Sheely placed 3rd in the senior Ladies but, having missed one round, came 5th overall. Cameron steel was 5th on the day and 9th overall. Shannon McGovern and Richard Garlick ere 13th and 20th respectively in the Senior Clubmans.

Gated Trial  23rd January 2011

These aren’t exactly results, rather accolades and comments sent in by Pete Haynes.

The furthest travelled had to be  Mario Candellone  from Italy.

Check out his website www.phototrial.it  - It was a pleasure meeting you and your new wife, hope you enjoy your stay in N.Z.

The furthest travelled on the day was Steve Armistead   361 laps

To see Steve blasting the Sprite up the hill climb was unbelievable.  It certainly won't be any wetter in Scotland, Steve.

The World’s Sexiest Male : Ravo

For those who missed seeing him with a wet t-shirt clinging to every curve on his torso - wow.

The Best Team:   Taranaki

Outnumbered all teams 700 to 1

The Best Ride of the Day:  Me (Pete Haynes)

The only one to clean the hardest section - out of the car park onto the road.

Thanks to Ravo for setting the trial - it was enjoyed by all.  Thanks also to Warren Laugesen for the afternoon coaching for the brave fools who chose to stay.

Photos of morning after by Ravo.
