Tauranga MX Series Round 2

Morning rain meant that the riders competing in Round 2 of the Tauranga Club series were able to get a couple of dust free races in before the track dried out.

Numbers on the mini track were sparse because of the clash with the Mini nationals in Huntly but the action was hot. Jordan Lewis topped the day’s points in the 50cc division 1 class with Wade Meredith, Tamzin Fuller and Luke Frazer-Brown very consistent behind him. In the division 2 class, Sean Callinan was top for the day with 3 out of 4 wins. Alex Frazer-Brown nabbed the 4th win and was runner up on the day with Kane Grimmett and Sam Meredith filling the next two spots. Taylor Kennedy made a clean sweep of the B grade 65cc with Logan Symes in second place. Because of the Huntly absentees, Connor Hawkless was the lone rider in the Trail class so he headed to the main track to compete in the A grade 65cc class as well. He acquitted himself very well, racing to second place for the day behind the unbeatable Brad Cameron who won every race. Connor Lucas, Wesley Fuller and Trent Cameron were close behind but plagued by DNFs.

The junior racing was hard and fast as well.  Simon Atkinson won all 3 races in the 85cc 11-12 years but Cameron Farley and Sam Middleton jostled for second place with Josh Allen in 4th. The 13-16 year 85cc class was led by Hayden Rumble (pictured on his 125) with 2 wins out of 3 but only 3 points separate the next 3 riders, Evan Hawkless, Matt Kenyon and Lee Ormsby.  The battling for the lower placings  between Christina Cameron, Cole Atkinson, Andrew Jeffrey, Jayden Boyken and Brad Holmes  was equally sharp and exciting.  Kurt Langford, fresh back from injury, showed a clean pair of heels in the 12-14 years 125cc class with Max Emett edging out Matt Kenyon and Ash Garrett. Chris Foster was well and truly warmed up from his class win at the GNCC on Saturday and secured 3 wins in the 15-16 years 125cc ahead of Marco White, Taylor Trott and Denzil Grimmett.  Ashley Bond made it 2 out of 3 to beat Christina Cameron and Amber Grimmett in the Junior Women’s races.

Jessie Waterhouse was supreme in both the Senior Women’s class and in the Senior B 125cc with her sister Casey tying for second  alongside Melissa Patterson from Rotorua in the Women’s event. Stephanie Christensen finished the day in first place ahead of Shirley Sheely in the Novice Women’s race.

Bike number 113 was very active in several classes throughout the day but, with Scott Atchison in the seat, it led home the Vet 40+ riders. Only 7 points separate the first 3.  Brian Breingan came in second with the very energetic Leddy Middleton in 3rd.  Leddy also won all 3 races in the 250cc Senior B group. Round 3 is only a fortnight away and will be held at Maddix Park on Sunday November 28th.

Huntly Mini Champs

Tauranga rules the roost as far as 50cc mini riders are concerned. Jacob Hunt had already claimed the North Island title at Taupo but this weekend saw him bring the 50cc Intro  National title back to Tauranga as well with his 5 wins and one second place at Huntly. Runner up and close on his tail was another very promising rider, Jontae Carroll, who won the race that Jacob missed out on and was second in all the others. Jontae was also runner up in Taupo.

The other local riders competing at Huntly did not make the podium but still showed they are forces to be reckoned with at a national level. Trent Duggan was 6th and Luke McClymont 10th in the 6-8 years 50cc MX class.  Harrison Forrester Moore was 4th, Bradley Jeffrey 6th and Isha Phillips 10th in the 7-11 years trail Class. Issha just missed on a a top 10 finish in the Ladies race when she came home 11th.  There were close to 70 riders entered in the highly competitive  9-11 years 65cc class.  Josh McClymont was 12th, Chris Merriman 16th and Brad Cameron 30th  in the A group with Xavier Anderson 20th in the B group.
