The first round of Supercross at Tokoroa on Saturday evening, Tauranga MX, Patetonga MX and Round 2 of the Bel-Ray in Huntly on Sunday as well as all the activity in Waimiha – it was an action packed weekend.

The Tauranga Club held its final round and prize-giving in a hotly contested event at Maddix Park. As the Spring Series point totals were based on the best 3 of 4 rounds, most of the class winners were decided on the day.  The racing began on a track that had had the benefit of rain during the week and a grooming by Michael Paton, however Sunday proved to be the hottest day on record for quite some time - it was a real scorcher – so dust did develop as the round progressed. But the jumps were safe and there were no accidents.

Casey Waterhouse really enjoyed her day. “It was my first ride on my new Y250”, she says. “It was way better and the track was fun as, mean as, and the “S” section was cool”.

Danny Merriman also liked the double hairpin “S” section and the competitiveness of fellow young riders Ryan Metz, Logan Blackburn and Scott Barr-Smith. “I got in some mean passes,” he says, “it was good racing, didn’t know who was going to get the flag”.

“The practice went well,” reports Logan, “I had a good look at the new part they added to the track. It was a really hot day but a good one. I won all 3 junior 125 races and the overall.  I also won 2 out of 3 of the senior 125 races and got 2nd in the other.”

The big winners were Matt Kenyon who won both the 13-16 Years 85cc class & the 12-14 Years 125cc class and Jessie Waterhouse who won both the senior Women and 125cc B Grade trophies.

Full results for the Spring Series are on www.taurangamcc.co.nz but please note that riders who were not competing for points are not featured.

The day concluded with a lolly scramble, a distribution of some very generous spot prizes offered by the club and the trophy presentation for the Spring Series.  Congratulations to all the trophy winners and to all those who competed and helped make the series a success.  Thanks also to the committee and helpers who organized the series.

Patetonga MX

It was a hot day in Patetonga and dust was an issue there as well. Keith Paterson created a bit of a stir when he won the MX1 class on his vintage CR500 as well as the Vets.  The bike is 25 years old and was beating the modern ones. It goes to show that in fact the rider has more to do with a win than just the throttle speed.

Garth Amrein from Katikati is back from injury. He gained 3 second placings in  the 125cc Junior 15-16 years and 2 first placings and a DNF in the Senior 125 cc class.

Bel-Ray Cross Country

Local rider Gavin Weston finished 1st in the Senior SupaVets class and was 1st overall. Rhys Henry was 10th and 8th overall in the Senior Expert class.  Richard Garlick and Shannon McGovern were 16th and 19th respectively in the Senior Clubmans. Unfortunately this event clashed with the Waimiha events.

SuperCross Round 1

The Tauranga area has some big names and some up & coming names on the mx/supercross scene.

In the SX Lites class, Peter Broxholme was 3rd behind Scott Columb and Brad Groombridge.  Mason Phillips suffered a broken collar bone and was not pointed.

In the SX Open, Cody Cooper was 3rd behind Josh Coppins and Justin McDonald with Davi Fisher and Robby Stewart in 7th and 8th.

In the Junior 250, Logan Blackburn came 6th. “The track was mint,” he reports, “but it looked like it was going to rain.  The practice went surprisingly smooth, jumped every jump perfect and tried to go faster through the woops, building my confidence every lap.” When it came to the racing, Logan wasn’t very pleased with his starts.  His best race finish was 4th in Race 2.

Full race results are on www.mylaps.com. Round 2 of the supercross is in Taupo on Sunday January 2nd 2011.
