Feel like a cross-country race this Sunday?

Greg Power and his team are running round 5 of the GNCC at Maddix Park on Sunday. Even if you haven’t done the full series, you can still compete as each round is stand alone with medals for the various class winners. You don’t need a licence, you don’t need to be a club member, you can just turn up and register on the day. Make sure you have your bike, of course, and your gear including helmet, boots and goggles.

There has been some rain in Tauranga, today Friday, so there should be none of the dusty conditions of last year and Mike Sheely has been grooming up the trails.  Maddix Park is closed on the Saturday to finish the race set up.

Round 5 is the final round so a prize-giving with trophies, certificates and caps will be held after each of the 3 races. The races are:

-       Race 1: Youth & Rookie Ladies:  Short easy course.  Race time: 1.5hours. Entry fee:  $40  Starts 9am

-       Race 2: Rookie, Clubman & Senior Ladies: Mid level course.  Race time: 2 hours.  Entry fee:  $60  Starts 11.30am.

-       Race 3:  Expert, Pro, Elite: More testing course with bush extensions & logs etc.  Race time 2.5 hours.  Entry fee:  $60.  Starts 2pm(?)

The series runs from October to February with the best 4 finishes of each rider counting towards the trophies. .

At this stage, there are no 100% guaranteed winners so this last round is crucial.  Even the leaders have to make sure they finish.  To be the overall Grand National Cross Country Champion, however, you need to complete all 5 rounds. Karl Power is strongly favoured to take the title but he still must finish in the top 5.

It has not yet been confirmed if last year's winner, Paul Whibley, pictured above, will be here to provide that extra bit of challenge.
