Dirt Guide Series Final Round

The 3rd & final round of the Dirt Guide Series saw trophies going to two local riders. Joel Byrne won the Expert 4-stroke Unders class on his Kawasaki KXF250 and Reece Burgess won both the overall event and the Expert 4-stroke Overs  class on his Husaberg FE450.

Sean Clarke had once again put together an enduro-based cross country that was a good, challenging package- in other words, a hard ride. Situated between Taupo and Tokoroa where the soil is able to handle the wet, the track was 100% amongst the pine trees making  a tighter track than most, with few places to rest and tree roots that became exposed towards the end.

For Joel, the third round was his best yet.  The Leatt 4 Hour race the week before had helped bring his speed up and he had found some pace again. This was Joel’s first time doing the Dirt Guide Series so he was pretty happy with his result and the trophy.

For Reece, the key to the win was a reasonable start and consistent corner speed, smoothness and no mistakes.  He also had the cushion of the large Husaberg tank that allowed him to do 4 laps on a single tank whereas most others could do only 2 or 3.  However his win wasn’t without its problems, one of them being getting snagged on his own father’s bike during a passing manoeuvre!  Read Reece’s full report here.

Other riders to do well included:

Eldon Frost 4th on the day and 2nd in the series in the Intermediate 4-stroke Overs – not bad for only doing 2 of the 3 rounds, Derek Maisey 1st on the day in the intermediate Vets 35-39, Drisana Sheely 3rd on the day in the Intermediate Ladies, Paul Burgess 5th on the day in the 50+ Intermediate Vets and 3rd in the series, Hayden McGregor 6th in the Intermediate 2 stoke Overs on the day, Rhys Henry 8th overall in the Expert 4-stroke Unders and 13th on the day, Marcel Steens 12th on the day in the Intermediate Vets 40-49 and Matthew Reilly 9th on the day in the Intermediate 2 stroke Unders.  In the Junior 14 and over class, Reuben Steens was 6th on the day and 5th overall and Ross Cossey was 12th on the day.
