North Island Mini Champs

After the fog came the good weather as Huntly hosted the North Island Mini Champs on Saturday.  There was no sign of the sticky clay that had jammed between the forks at the practice day a few weeks back. The event was well organized, it ran on time , there were no major accidents and the track was perfect when it dried out.  All of the young riders competing enjoyed the day, whether they returned home covered with glory or not.

8 Year old Sam Meredith (pictured at left) was the most successful local rider, racing into 3rd place on the podium in the 50cc 6-8 Years MX class and coming home with a trophy and a new pair of goggles. He came 3rd in the first race, won the second but when he got stuck behind a back lapper in the final race, a rival got past so Sam finished 3rd. “I didn’t get good starts”, says Sam. “I got run into by others.  There were a couple of jumps on our track and I liked the table top after the finish”.

Luke Fraser-Brown finishd 15th in the same class with 14/13/12 results. Luke like the corners that were easy to go around as they were a bit slippery.

In the 7-8 Years 65cc, Madoc Dixon had a day of 5th placings  with 5th overall while, in the same class, a not-up-to-his-usual-form Sean Callinan finished 7th overall, in spite of good starts.  “The 65s did the longer track,” reports Sean.”It had about 10 jumps”.  “I didn’t like the kickers on some of the jumps and I didn’t like the bumps and ruts”, he adds.

In the 9-11 65cc, Alex Fraser-Brown finished 25th overall in one of the biggest and most competitive class line-ups. He was also one who liked the jumps but didn’t like the ruts.

Australian Tyler Darby won the Champion of Champions race “because Brody Connelly crashed” according to one spectator. Tyler also won the 9-11 65cc age group. “because on the last corner, right on the line, the kiwi rider who was winning slackened off” the same person observed.  A hard lesson to learn.

Two mini riders who would have liked to race at Huntly were Wade Meredith and Tyler Wiremu.  Unfortunately they had not notched up enough MNZ affiliated events to be eligible for these North Island Champs but they are hoping to be all ready to fire for the Mini Nationals which are scheduled for Upper Hutt  on October 7th & 8th 2012.
