Australian Motocross Champion Kirk Gibbs is out of the Australian Supercross Championship after breaking his hip in a training accident. The KTM Motocross Racing Team’s new MX Nationals champion sustained the injury while training for this weekend’s Adelaide round of the Australian Supercross Championship.

Gibbs, who hails from South Australia but now resides on the Gold Coast, will miss the remainder of this season before returning in 2016 for the defence of his outdoor crown.

“Unfortunately I crash yesterday at the practice track and ended up in hospital with a couple of breaks in my hip, which is pretty painful,” Gibbs confirmed on social media. “I’m so bummed because I felt like things where starting to click more with an couple of solid weeks under my belt.

“Sorry to KTM and team, sponsors, family, friends, all my supporters and most of all this girl who has to look after me fall out for the next six weeks… I hate this but and good break now and recovery to come back hungrier for 2016!”

Following a whirlwind end to the MX Nationals and his guest Glen Helen MXGP appearance, Gibbs was enjoying a consistent start to the supercross season with fourth at Bathurst’s opener and fifth last time out at Jimboomba.

It’s also been confirmed this afternoon that KTM’s factory-supported SX2 hope Caleb Ward will also sit out the South Australian round due to a concussion sustained at the recent Jimboomba round.
