Seven days of digging, 4,500 trucks filled with sand, five kilometers of fencing and 63 containers in place – The Hague is ready for Red Bull Knock Out.
This weekend, 1,500 motocrossers will compete in the ultimate beach race, fighting the sea, sand and stormy winds of the Dutch city.
“This is going to be so incredibly challenging for the participants and at the same time such a great spectacle for all those who will be witnessing it,” says Double MX-2 world champion and home favourite Jeffrey Herlings, who’s unable to compete this year because of an injury, but insisted on being the first rider to test out the track.
“The shifting sand, rising sea levels and hundreds of riders per heat will result in this beautiful chaos of noise! I simply cannot wait,” he said.
The beach of The Hague has been transformed into a five kilometer-long track, a fast lane following the tide line that helps riders reach speeds of up to 200km/h followed by a technical part consisting of 57 jumps. The riders will compete under the watchful eye of thousands of fans rooting for them from the beach boulevard.
One of the unique aspects of this race is the fact that amateur riders (16 years+) get to compete against the world’s best. On Saturday, they will stand side by side on the beach with heroes such as British Enduro rider David Knight (UK), Frenchman Adrien van Beveren, motocross athletes Ben and Nathan Watson (UK) and former Dutch Knock Out champion Marc de Reuver.
