Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez took his second win of the 2013 MotoGP season at Sachsenring, beating Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow by 1.5 seconds at the checkers. Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi rounded out the podium.
Title defender Jorge Lorenzo remained on the sidelines due to injury, and Marquez’s teammate, Dani Pedrosa, decided to sit out as well. Pedrosa was found to have a small fracture in his left collarbone following a crash during practice at the German circuit, but decided to forego competition due to feeling ill. Low-blood pressure was later cited as contributing to his condition.
"This morning I had my check up in the medical centre and I felt okay, my shoulder was painful but otherwise I felt fine," said Pedrosa. "The doctors declared me fit to take part in warm up. Then shortly before the session I began to feel dizzy again and my blood pressure dropped. The doctors came to see me in my truck and we decided I shouldn't take part in the session. I returned to my motorhome to rest and still felt dizzy and sick. The doctors arrived at my motorhome and informed me that they did not consider I was okay to race and would therefore declare me unfit."
With Pedrosa and Lorenzo out, there were some new faces in the lead pack once competition was underway. Rossi took charge of the front and was followed by LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl and Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro in third. Espargaro managed to hold his position for two laps before losing ground to Marquez, who trailed in fourth. Eventually a number of prototypes got the best of the CRT rider, dropping him back to eighth where he'd finish.
Marquez, meanwhile, settled into third-place and set his sights on Rossi, who’d lost the lead to Bradl before the end of Lap 1. The German rider remained out front through Lap 5, but Marquez was on the hunt and picked off both Rossi and Bradl with apparent ease, assuming the lead by Lap 6 and never looking back. Bradl held to second for a brief period after that, but Rossi made it past the Honda ace by Lap 9 and Crutchlow followed suit soon after when Bradl slowed mid-corner and opened the door for the British rider to move past.
As Marquez stretched out a small gap, Rossi worked to defend against Crutchlow. The Tech 3 rider chased the runner-up spot until mid-race when he finally was able to push past Rossi. Crutchlow maintained a strong pace which chipped away at Marquez’s lead, but it wasn’t enough to get him within range of the front before the finish.
Bradl held to fourth to the finish followed by Go&Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista in fifth. Crutchlow’s teammate, Bradley Smith, ended the day in sixth followed by Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso in seventh. Espargaro took eighth ahead of Dovi’s teammate, Nicky Hayden, in ninth and Ignite Pramac Racing’s Michele Pirro rounded out the top-10.
Marquez’s performance puts him in the overall points lead. Pedrosa and Lorenzo are still well within range of the top spot though, with Pedrosa lagging by two in second overall and Lorenzo 11 adrift of the leader.
