Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo scored his fifth win of the season at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez crossed the finish line 3.3 seconds behind Lorenzo in the runner-up position and was followed by his teammate, Dani Pedrosa, in third.

Lorenzo gained the lead off the start and by the end of the first lap had already built a 1.2 second gap on the field. Pedrosa settled into second-place and Marquez held to third while Lorenzo’s teammate, Valentino Rossi, maintained pace with the Repsol riders in fourth. Marquez held tight to Pedrosa’s rear tire through the opening laps but with 24 to go the rookie ran wide in Turn 8, losing ground on Pedrosa and allowing Rossi to push through into third-place.

Marquez spent the next eight laps finding his grove in fourth, and by the mid-point of the race he’d caught back up to Rossi and made the pass back into podium position. The current points leader then set to catching Pedrosa, and in the space of a few laps had made his first move into second-place. Pedrosa held tight to Marquez and with seven laps remaining answered back to regain the runner-up spot. His stint in second would be short lived, however, as Marquez pushed past a few corners later. Marquez attempted to catch Lorenzo during the final stages of competition, but it was too late to make up ground on the Mallorcan.

“Luckily we improved the bike a lot in warm up, especially in braking so we improved the lap time and the pace quite a bit," said Lorenzo. "I was convinced to follow my strategy of the last couple of races which was to try to break away and finally I could do it. The first two laps I had a big advantage so I had to keep pushing to maintain a distance because they never gave up and wanted to catch me. I’m happy, we recovered five points and we are closer to Marc. I need to be constant and try to win races and stay focused.”

Rossi finished in fourth-place followed by LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl in fifth. Bradl and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow were in close quarters the entire race and Crutchlow held the advantage for much of the competition. Bradl remained patient to the end and finally made a pass on the British rider during the final lap. Crutchlow came across the finish line in sixth, just a few tenths behind Bradl. Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista ended in seventh.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden finished eighth and ninth, respectively, followed by Ignite Pramac Racing’s Michele Pirro in 10th. Crutchlow’s teammate, Bradley Smith, took 11th ahead of top CRT finisher Colin Edwards of NGM Mobile Forward Racing. Top CRT qualifier, Aleix Espargaro, was handed a ride-through penalty for jumping the start and he trailed Edwards in 13th.

Marquez remains the overall points leader, 34 points ahead of new second-placed rider Lorenzo. Pedrosa, who is mathematically tied with Lorenzo, slips to third due to Lorenzo’s current win record this season.
