Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi topped the timesheet in Friday practice at Catalunya, earning the spot late in Free Practice 2 a slim 0.049 seconds ahead of his teammate, Jorge Lorenzo. Lorenozo set the pace early in FP2, besting his top FP1 time within the first laps, and remained the man to beat until the Doctor made his move.
Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa ended third-fastest in combined time, finishing as one of only three riders unable to improve their lap time in FP2 over their performance in FP1. The fourth-fastest rider, Cal Crutchlow of Monster Yamaha Tech 3, was another who failed to improve his lap time in FP2, as was Paul Bird Motorsports’ Yonny Hernandez, who ended the day in 21st.
Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista placed fifth-fastest, looking strong aboard his satellite Honda. The Spanish rider sat as high as second on the timesheet during FP2 and ended 0.455 seconds adrift of the leader. Pedrosa’s teammate, Marc Marquez, took sixth with a lap time nearly one second faster in FP2 than his best effort in FP1. Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso finished seventh and eighth respectively.
LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl placed ninth in FP2, recovering from an early session fall that saw the German rider slide off track into the gravel. He was unharmed in the incident and his machine suffered mostly cosmetic damage. Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro was the fastest CRT rider on the grid, placing 10th, followed by Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone in 11th. Espargaro’s teammate, Randy de Puniet, was 12th-fastest followed by Ignite Pramac Racing’s Michele Pirro, who is riding in Ben Spies’ place while the American rider recovers from pectoral and shoulder injuries.
