Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa earned his second consecutive pole position of the season, turning the fastest lap ever at Catalunya with a time of 1’40.893. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow jumped up to second-fastest on his final lap of the session, bumping Yamaha Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo to third-place.

Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista was first atop the timesheet in Q2 but was quickly bested by Pedrosa’s teammate, Marc Marquez, followed soon after by Crutchlow, who was the first rider to dip into the 1’41s. Pedrosa nipped the British rider in the first portion of the session, and went unchallenged at the top through the remainder of Q2. The Spaniard set the best lap ever at the circuit in the final five minutes and from there took it relatively slow, putting in three more full laps before the end of the day well off race pace.

Lorenzo took to the track early on but was forced to return to the garage in the opening minutes with clutch issues. The Mallorcan went back out on his second bike for a period but was unable to challenge for the front row until late in the session. Lorenzo jumped up to second-place on the grid after his final lap, but Crutchlow was on a flying lap of his own just behind and when the satellite rider crossed the finish line he’d bested Lorenzo by 0.065 seconds.

Bautista will head up the second row followed by Ducati’s Nicky Hayden in fifth and Marquez in sixth. Lorenzo’s teammate, Valentino Rossi, bested his timesheet-topping practice lap from Friday but it was only enough to get him to seventh-place on the grid. Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone joins Rossi on the third row in eighth, along with Hayden’s teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, in ninth.

LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl qualified in 10th, followed by Crutchlow’s teammate, Bradley Smith, in 11th and top CRT rider Aleix Espargaro of Power Electronics Aspar in 12th.
