Paulin & Tonus Win
Italian Champs 2014
Paulin wins MX1 – Cairoli has problems
Factory Kawasaki rider Gautier Paulin has won the MX1 moto and elite moto in Montevarchi, Italy today. The Frenchman led every lap of both moto’s, although Antonio Cairoli failed to make a lap of the MX1 race after a problem at the start. In the elite moto it was again Paulin, and again Cairoli had problems, starting badly and then fighting his way into fourth spot.
“Good day in Italy,” Paulin said. “As I also won the super final! Next race is Qatar in two weeks now, ready for it!”
As far as the Italian Championships go, Belgian Jeremy Van Horebeek won the Italian MX1 Championship due to the no-start of Cairoli in the MX1 moto today, Cairoli won the Elite Italian Championship and Christophe Charlier won the Italian MX2 Championship.
Tyla Rattray failed to race the Elite MX1/MX2 moto, and we are looking into why that was. All results and points below.
Tonus wins MX2
Arnaud Tonus has won the MX2 moto at the third rounds of the Italian Championships, held at the Montevarchi circuit. The Swizz rider led from the start and controlled the race. French riders Dylan Ferrandis (who came from seventh on lap one) and Christophe Charlier were second and third.
Young Aussie Lke Style held third place on lap one, dropped to finish a respectable fifth ahead of his team-mate Petar Petrov in his European debut race.
Charlier won the MX2 Championship with 280pts with Tonus second on 240pts. Tonus elected not to race the second round but won rounds one and three.
Cairoli has problems
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tony Cairoli came away from Rd. 3 of the Italian international MX Championship on Sunday with the Elite title in his hands. But a brush on the first corner of the MX1 race ended with a DNF that knocked him down to second place in the MX1 category.
Cairoli had been the overall top performer in the two earlier rounds, easily winning both the MX1 and Elite Class races and went into the final round at Montevachi with a perfect scorecard. But an incident in the first corner of the MX1 race saw KTM’s multi MX1 world champion make contact with Steven Frossard and he had to pull out of the race.
Cairoli made a great comeback in the Elite race later in the afternoon despite getting a painful knock on his ankle in the earlier crash. Starting right at the back of the field at fortieth place, he went on the charge, moving up to seventh place in the two opening laps. The popular Italian then got stuck in traffic in mid race but eventually managed to move up to fourth at the flag.
He finished behind former teammate Jeremy van Horebeek in the MX1 class rankings but was the clear winner in the Elite category.
Red Bull KTM’s Jordi Tixier did not compete in the third round, having been on the list to race at the International in Valence, France, which was canceled due to bad weather. The French rider still had enough accrued points to take a podium third in the MX2 class, while Paul Jonass of Latvia and Italian Ivo Monticelli from Marchetti Racing Team KTM took 4-5 in the MX2 championship.
