Mosig Goes 1-1, Wilson Extends
Australian MX Champs 2015
CDR Yamaha's Kade Mosig has picked up his second straight round win at the ninth round of the 2015 MX Nationals, walking away with perfect 1-1 score card at the Echo Valley circuit this afternoon.
It was championship leader Kirk Gibbs who started the day off on the right foot, posting the fastest time during regular qualifying aboard his all new 2016 KTM SX-F450, before Dylan Long then topped the time sheets in the Superpole competition, picking up five championship points for himself along the way.
When the gates dropped for racing on the tough and technical, Toowoomba track, it was Penrite Oil Honda's Ben Townley who grabbed the hole-shot with Mosig quickly working into second position before making the move into the lead.
The two leading riders set a frantic pace for the remainder of the moto with Mosig able to hold off the former world champion by the narrowest of margins at the line.
CDR Yamaha's Dan Reardon raced to a third place finish ahead of Adam Monea, with Gibbs taking 5th, just ahead of his KTM team mate, Luke Styke.
Superpole winner Long recovered from a early race mistake to finish 7th, with Penrite Honda's Cody Cooper and the Motul Suzuki pairing of Egan Mastin and Kale Makeham rounding out the top ten.
Moto two got off to an identical start to race one with Townley again leading the field through the first turn.
Monea once again showed he is one of the fastest riders in the nation when he moved into the race lead with Mosig also moving forward into second position, while Gibbs and Townley had a small run in with Townley coming off second best and Gibbs moving into third.
At the race came to the closing stages, Monea looked as though he was set to pick up the race win before he washed out his front wheel with just a lap and a half remaining in the race.
The mistake allowed Mosig who all over Monea, to sneak through and claim his second race win for the day and a perfect 1-1 round winning result.
"Ecstatic would be the word," Mosig said directly after wrapping up the second moto win. "It was a tough day, Adam was riding great and BT is a world class rider and he was on it.
"It didn't come easy and I had to work for it. It is what we have been chasing all year long, to go 1-1. We have won three rounds now, but we had not gone 1-1, we had got a moto win.
"What more can you say with a perfect day, it is awesome and a massive compliment to the CDR Yamaha team." Mosig added.
Monea was able to quickly recover from his small crash to hang on to second position for the moto, with Gibbs crossing the line in 3rd.
Styke once again finished behind his team-mate in fourth, though a bit of a way back, with Townley rounding out the top five.
Monea's second place finish in moto two lifted him to second overall for the round, with Townley completing the podium at Toowomba, finishing two points ahead of Gibbs in fourth, with Styke a further three points back in 5th.
Mosig's round win elevated him into second position into the championship standings, though still some 61 points behind Gibbs heading into the final round at Coolum next Sunday.
Styke moved down one position and will need to make up 10 points on Mosig in order to move back into second position in the final standings, while Monea only sits a futher five points further back in fourth.
MX 2
JCR Altherm Yamaha rider Jay Wilson has extended his championship lead after picking up the MX2 round win at the ninth round of the 2015 MX Nationals held at Toowoomba today.
It was the KTM two stroke pairing of Dylan Wills and Jack Simpson who fired out to the front of the pack when racing commenced earlier today, with reigning MX2 champion Luke Clout in tow aboard his Serco Yamaha.
Clout made his way around the two KTM's to lead the field through the opening lap, before Wills fought back re-claiming the lead in a action packed beginning to the race.
Jay Wilson worked his way into third position before quickly making two more passes, taking the lead of the race himself and looking as though he was about to clear out.
However Caleb Ward had other ideas and became the fifth rider to run up front with-in the first half of the moto.
The battle out front was not yet complete with Japanese Veteran Takeshi Katsuya making his way around both Wilson and Ward in quick succession to take control out front, with Katsuya maintaining the race lead until the finish.
Ward finished in second position ahead of Wilson in third, while Yamaha privateer Wade Hunter worked his way to fourth ahead of Wills in fifth, leaving Clout to cross the line in sixth position.
When the gates dropped on race two it was Husqvarna's Nathan Crawford who claimed the holeshot before Wills once again quickly took hold of the early race lead.
Jay Wilson once again worked his way into third position and quickly found a way round the leading duo to put himself in great position to take both the second moto win and the overall round win for the day.
"I couldn't go this whole season and go for this championship and not get an overall win and I was happy to get it done here." Wilson told Aiden Williams from NRGTV after picking up the round win at Toowoomba.
"I have always done well here, every senior race I have had here I have won, It is a good record to have I guess and I am pretty happy to walk away with the overall here today.
"They did an awesome job here with the track and it ran awesome.
"We went to New Zealand in the break, the three week break and I done a lot of training and testing with Josh (Coppins) and we fine tuned the bike and we have it running perfect now.
"I am looking forward to getting to Coolum next weekend, it is a short turn around, but I will go home this week and just keep working hard. I can't wait to get to Coolum.
Ward moved into second position and set about chasing down Wilson and while he was able to close in on the championship leader, he was never close enough to make a move for the lead, leaving Wilson to claim the race and round win.
Katsuya crossed the line in third position to finish the day on equal points with Wilson, but had to settle for second overall on count-back, with Ward's 2-2 result enough for him to claim the final step on the podium.
Wills ended the day in 4th overall, ahead of Hunter in 5th while Crawford who crashed early in race one was able to salvage 6th position for the round.
Jed Beaton edged out his team mate for 7th overall for the round, leaving Clout in 8th on the back of his 6-9 moto scores for the day.
Heading into the final round at Coolum next Sunday Jay Wilson will carry a very handy 21 point lead over Clout as the 2015 MX2 championship comes down to the wire.
