In early January 2013, BMW sold the off-road company Husqvarna to Pierer Industry AG, owned by KTM CEO Stefan Pierer. At the time there was little indication what the relationship between KTM and Husqvarna would be, but a recent press release from the Austrian brand, included in full below, sheds some light on what customers can expect. By way of the Swedish-born brand Husaberg, owned by KTM since 1995, Husqvarna will receive upgrades in 2014 and will be offered in the “Enduro, Motocross and Sportminicycles” segments. Husqvarna and Husaberg already have an intimate history, which will now extend further. Husqvarna was born in Sweden and started producing motorcycles at the turn of the 20th century. Husky became a force in the industry but started to slip mid-century. The brand was purchased by Electrolux in 1977 and then less than 10 years later was acquired by Cagiva. In 1988 a number of Swedish engineers, unhappy with Husky’s direction under the new management, parted from the brand and formed Husaberg Motor AB in Sweden. Now, Husqvarna Sportmotorcycle GMBH is set to launch in October 2013, at which time we will be privy to the new line-up. – MotoUSA

The year 2013 will be remembered in motorcycling history as the year that Husqvarna was reborn.

HUSQVARNA STARTS A NEW ERA OF GREAT SUCCESS
Following the acquisition of Husqvarna by Pierer Industries AG and after careful analysis and evaluation of all aspects, it was decided to reunite what came out of shared roots 25 years ago. In other words, Husqvarna will enter a positive new era by combining its own rich heritage with Husaberg’s state-of-the-art technology.
