World SBK points leader Tom Sykes cemented his title advantage heading to the season finale with a double victory performance at Magny-Cours. Starting from pole position, the Kawasaki ace bested his leading rivals, Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli, as the factory Aprilia duo shuffled the remaining podium spots – each claiming a second- and third-place finish on the day. Sykes will now arrive at the Jerez finale with a 37-point lead.

Race 1

Sykes pulled away from the field early in the first race, with Guintoli in tow. The British rider went on to outpace his French competitor. Laverty couldn’t match the two front-runners, piloting his RSV4 to an unchallenged third.

Marco Melandri saw his unlikely title hopes extinguish with a fifth-place result, one spot behind Althea Racing’s Davide Giugliano. Meanwhile, Michele Pirro made the most of his first Alstare Ducati race besting the Pata Honda duo of Michel Fabrizio and Leon Haslam for sixth.

The first SBK race was cut short by the red flag following a Lap 19 crash by Pedercini Kawasaki’s Mark Aitchison.

Race 2

The second SBK race was shortened as well, this time for rain. The premature end came after 21 laps were completed, with Sykes well ahead of his Aprilia rivals. Both factory RSV4 riders went down as the rain brought out the red flag, with the finishing order based on the last completed lap.

Sykes topped the podium, 11 seconds ahead of Laverty and Guintoli – the Irishman seizing second on the rostrum. The double victory is Sykes' third of the 2013 campaign. Davide Giugliano retained another fourth-place finish ahead of a BMW rider, this time Chaz Davies. The second Beemer, piloted by Marco Melandri, placed seventh, one position behind Vincent Philippe – the World Endurance ace filling in for injured FIXI Crescent Suzuki rider Leon Camier.

"It is great to score a double win here and we made two small changes in the bike to race two," said Sykes in a Kawasaki team press release. "We are always chasing perfection. That is what we spend our lives doing. When you are on the edge all the time you have got very small changes that make a big outcome. The bike was very nice to ride today and the races went very well. When the circuit and conditions suit a bike and rider you have to take the most advantage from it. Magny Cours was generous to me, the bike and all at Kawasaki, so this was great."
