Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo walked away from the field at Mugello with a dominating win in front of Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow. Mugello was not easy on the competition with crashes plaguing practice and qualifying, and the same was the case during the race with two high-profile riders, Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez, crashing out of the race. Lorenzo, however, put himself out front at the first turn and had a drama free ride to the finish.

When the red lights went out, Pedrosa jumped to the front, but lost the position in the first turn to Lorenzo with an aggressive bump pass on the inside. Marquez slid into third with Andrea Dovizioso just behind. Both riders were dealing with aches and pains from crashes earlier in the week, but were in good position to battle for much needed championship points.

In the second turn, hometown favorite Rossi took a hit from Alvaro Bautista, sending them both off the track at speed and into the air fence. Both riders were out. As the two returned to the paddock the crowd cheered Rossi and booed Bautista. The Doctor’s frustration was apparent, but as always he cracked a smile and a wave to the cameras. Bautista, however, looked as if he wanted to crawl in a hole and hide from the rabid Mugello fans.

“On the second corner I was on the outside already in front of Bautista,” recounted Rossi. “For me, from the inside he opened the throttle to close the line so he doesn't lose another position but I was already in front so he came to me and took me on the boot. I was lucky because it was a bad crash and I arrived at the wall but I’m ok. We will try next week in Barcelona, but it is a pity because firstly it is Mugello and secondly I think we could have done a good race and maybe arrived on the podium.”

As the laps wore on, Ducati’s Dovizioso faded back from his fourth-place start to hover around sixth and seventh, mixing it up with his teammate Nicky Hayden behind LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl.

Crutchlow turned lonely laps in fourth slowing reeling in the duo of Factory Hondas, but it was obvious he would be stuck one shy of a podium. That was until just after a pass for second with five laps to go, Marquez lost the rear end on Lap 19 and lowsided into the gravel trap. This is the first major misstep on raceday for the rookie, but it was a costly one in terms of championship points.

From there on out the placing was set with Lorenzo crossing the line with over a six second lead over Pedrosa. Crutchlow grabbed another third-place finish and Bradl held of Dovizioso for fourth. Behind the 04 Ducati was the other two factory Ducs with Hayden and Michele Pirro on a prototype wild-card entry. Aleix Espargaro put his CRT entry into eighth. Bradley Smith was ninth his Tech 3 Yamaha. The second-place CRT entry was Hector Barbera in tenth.

“It’s very special; I won the last three years here so this track is magic for me and very positive for Yamaha,” explained Lorenzo. “It also reminds us to keep working on the bike as at the tracks which are not so flowing like Mugello we will struggle. I’m very happy to give this win to Yamaha Motor Racing President Shigeto Kitagawa because this was his last race here in Grand Prix, as he will retire. He has done a great job for the team in the last years and it is a big loss for us. I hope he will enjoy the different life he will have. Our president Yanagi-san is also lucky for me, I won the 2010 Championship in Malaysia when he was there on the track and again today a victory with his presence.”
