NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro led the way through both Free Practice sessions at Sachsenring, posting the fastest lap of the day on his final rotation in FP2. The current championship points leader, Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda, trailed by just over one-tenth in the second position followed by Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo in third.

Espargaro was strong from the start, utilizing the Yamaha frame during both sessions. He commented afterward that he’ll switch to the Forward frame for qualifying, feeling that it may perform better in the tighter turns of the circuit. Marquez had a more tumultuous day, suffering an off in FP1 that left him slow to stand. The Honda ace avoided serious injury and led the way for much of FP2 until Espargaro’s final lap push. Lorenzo put in a confident performance, saying after the second session that the bike is already set-up well for the circuit and that his fitness levels are high.

Local favorite, Stefan Bradl of LCR Honda MotoGP, finished fourth-fastest followed by Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista in fifth. Lorenzo’s teammate, Valentino Rossi, was unable to improve on his FP1 time and placed sixth in combined lap times for the day. Rossi explained that since temperatures were higher in the afternoon, he was forced to use the harder front tire and couldn’t find a suitable setting to improve on his earlier effort.

Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone was the fastest Ducati in seventh followed by Tech 3 Yamaha’s Pol Espargaro in eighth. Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso finished in ninth followed by Marquez’s teammate, Dani Pedrosa, in 10th. Pedrosa suffered a high-speed crash in FP2 at Turn 12 that sent him tumbling, but luckily he was able to avoid serious injury.
