Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo led way in MotoGP practice at Silverstone on Friday with a 2’02.734 in the afternoon session, just over one tenth-of a second faster than the circuit record lap he set there in 2012. Current championship points leader Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda finished second-fastest followed by his teammate, Dani Pedrosa, in third.

The day started with spots of rain on track during the opening Moto3 practice, but by the time GP riders headed out the circuit was completely dry. The morning lap times were subdued compared to the warmer afternoon session and the top spot changed hands numerous times as competitors dialed-in their machines for the circuit. Marquez ended FP1 on top and was the only rider to dip into the 2’03 range prior to the mid-day break. The second practice was all Lorenzo, with the Mallorcan logging his best effort of the day on his second fast lap.

"I started very fast because I improved almost one second and a half in the beginning; I was surprised with the improvement," explained Lorenzo. "At this track, when the rear tire starts to drop it’s very difficult to keep the same pace so we have to work hard to make a constant bike that works over long distance. I’m satisfied because I think we have the possibility to fight for the victory this time.”

Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista finished in fourth-position followed by Lorenzo’s teammate, Valentino Rossi, in fifth. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow finished seven-tenths of a second off the lead pace in sixth followed by Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso in seventh. Crutchlow’s teammate, Bradley Smith, took eighth ahead of LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl while Dovi’s teammate, Nicky Hayden, finished off the top-10.
